Why You Need Saturated Fat
Eating fat will not make you fat. Of course, is more complicated but you can safely eat saturated fat and stay lean. Saturated fat satiates faster that any other macro nutrient and keeps you satiated for a long time.
What are Saturated Fats?
Saturated fats comprise molecules that have single bonds between carbon molecules because they are saturated with hydrogen molecules. Saturated fats are typically solid at room temperature.
The single bond in saturated fats renders such fats easily digestible by our body. Remember, one of the principles of nutrition I use: the nutrient bioavailability. Animals transform plant-based nutrients we need into a digestible for us form.
Think vitamin K2. The most bioavailable form of K2 is contained in grass-fed butter. K2 has been linked to excellent dental health and proper jaw development because it facilitates the absorption of other minerals.
Natto, fermented soybeans, contains some amounts of K2. However, you cannot eat soybeans alone to obtain K2 from them, you must ferment them.
Animal products such as cream, butter, eggs, caviar, seafood (oysters, scallops, mussels, shrimp) contain high amounts of saturated fat.
Coconut butter contains high amounts saturated fat. In fact, coconut is the only plant that provides us with saturated fat. Other plant based (mostly from fruit such as olives and avocados) have monounsaturated fats that do not nourish and hydrate our body.
The Saturated Fat Conundrum
Dietary saturated fat does not raise cholesterol in the blood the way you have been told. It does not deposit in the arteries and does not coronary disease.
Alaskan Aleuts have been known for eating saturated fat from fish and seafood. In fact, it is all they eat in the winter. Their blood pressure does not rise because dietary saturated fat keeps their blood thin and allows it to easily flow through the vessels.
Chronic inflammation raises LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol in the blood, not the dietary saturated fat. When chronic inflammation causes a penetration in an artery or a blood vessel, low-low density lipoprotein particles increase in the blood and rush to the damaged vessel to repair it.
On the other hand, we have theories on the cause of inflammation but yet to provide specific proof.
Until then we must rely on our experiences and experiences of others. If you want to have the health of someone you know, ask them what they do and test it yourself.
I developed conclusions in this article from my own experience of consistently consuming quality saturated fats. When I did not have enough saturated fat in my diet, I experienced low energy levels, hunger between meals, and skin dryness.
Eat Saturated Fats to Stay Fit
Saturated fat alone will not make you fit. You have to sleep, breathe correctly, follow the sun cycles and exercise to stay lean ( Sell or Be Sold). However, saturated fat does not interfere with the main hormone that regulates our body weight.
Insulin regulates your body weight. When the production of insulin rises, the body gets a signal to store fat.
Carbohydrates and proteins (to a lesser extent than carbohydrates) stimulate insulin production. Therefore, they excessive amount of carbohydrates and proteins will adversely affect insulin production and weight gain. Furthermore, insulin dysregulation leads to metabolic imbalances such as diabetes.
Saturated fat, on the other hand, does not cause insulin to fluctuate dramatically. Moreover, saturated fat provides steady supply of energy unlike carbohydrates which require frequent refueling.
Saturated Fat and Hormones
You need saturated fat to make hormones because saturated fats are the building blocks of hormones.
The thyroid gland needs saturated fats to secrete a sufficient amount of growth hormones. Also, you need saturated fats to support the health of reproductive organs, in particular during pregnancy.
Saturated Fat and Glowing Skin
When you experience dry skin, you may hear that you must be dehydrated and may be advised to drink more water to stay hydrated.
Drinking a lot of water to hydrate skin does not work that well. All you do when you drink too much water is dissolve electrolytes and purge essential minerals.
You need dietary saturated fat to give your skin moisture and glow. My favorite source of fat and micro nutrients is caviar. The fact that you do need a lot of caviar to feel satiated indicates that it is nutrient dense and these nutrients are easily digestible.
Saturated Fat and Mental Clarity
Try eggs for breakfast and notice how productive you become. Just make sure you use the entire egg: the yolk is the most precious part of it. The yolk contains roughly 80% of cholesterol which makes it nutritiously dense and bioavailable to the human body.
After the morning you have the mental clarity to solve complex problems. And your energy does not crash.
Do you know why you feel mentally sharp with a sufficient amount of saturated fat in your diet? The brain is made of fat and is nourished by raw saturated fats in your diet. It easily regenerates and recharges when you provide saturated fat. It turn, you can think clearly and make important decisions without impediment.
Until next time.
